Volunteer of the Year Award Categories and Criteria

Soul of Airdrie Award

The Soul of Airdrie Award is conferred to an Airdrie citizen who has made an outstanding, long-term contribution of at least 5 years to the City of Airdrie through their extraordinary commitment and efforts as a volunteer in any or all of the following fields: arts and culture, recreation, athletics, social and community services, and/or governance.

This individual demonstrates a passion for helping others to become resilient, contributing members of the community and enhances the quality of life of Airdrie residents by influencing enhancements to policy, and/or by mobilizing a significant collaborative effort among various groups in the community.

An Airdrie citizen is defined as an individual who resides within Airdrie and annexation boundaries.

Nominations for this category will be evaluated based on:

How did the nominee demonstrate a long-term and exemplary volunteer service in any or all of the following fields: arts and culture, recreation, athletics, social and community services, and/or governance:
  • How long has he/she volunteered in the community?
  • What is the nominee’s volunteer contribution to the community?

What positive impact has the nominee made to the quality of life in Airdrie by:

  • working with various groups?
  • mobilizing a significant collaborative effort or partnerships among various groups in the community?
  • building volunteer capacity?
  • enhancing the ability of his/her groups to have a bigger reach in the community?
  • assisting with the sustainability of the groups/programs/organizations?
  •  his/her influence in changes to policy?

Leader of Tomorrow Award

The Leader of Tomorrow Award is conferred to a young Airdrie citizen who has shown leadership through their volunteer involvement in school or the community. The nominee must be between the ages of 11 and 18.

For this award category, the nominee must attend school within Airdrie school attendance boundaries.

Nominations for this category will be evaluated based on:

What are examples of the nominee’s volunteer work in school and in the Airdrie community? Up to 25
How has he/she modeled leadership in the school or community? Has he/she initiated an activity that encouraged more people to get involved?

What impact has the volunteer made within the school setting and/or the community through his/her volunteer activities?

Did the nominee’s contribution:

  • make a difference to the community or school?
  • encourage other youth to be involved?
  • was the nominee able to encourage more people to get involved and make the activity sustainable?

Ambassador Award

The Ambassador Award is conferred to an Airdrie business entity that has made an outstanding contribution in the City of Airdrie by contributing to Airdrie’s community and opportunity.

An Airdrie business entity must operate within the Airdrie and annexation boundaries to be eligible.

Nominations for this category will be evaluated based on:

How did the business entity, through corporate voluntarism, contribute volunteer hours and resources (such as money, food donations, clothing, etc.) to the community?

What impact did the business entity’s contribution, through their volunteer activities, have on the community?

Did the business entity’s contribution:

  • encourage more people involvement?
  • make the activity/service sustainable?

Volunteer Advocate Award

The Volunteer Advocate Award is conferred to an Airdrie not-for-profit organization, a volunteer-comprised grassroots committee and/or a community group that has demonstrated community leadership by engaging citizens through voluntarism.

An Airdrie not-for-profit organization, or volunteer-comprised grassroots committee, or community group must operate within Airdrie and annexation boundaries to be eligible.

Nominations for this category will be evaluated based on:

Is the group able to engage more citizens in voluntarism? Are they able to retain volunteers?

Has the group demonstrated the “community drivers” of:

  • being open and welcoming of different types of people?
  • what activities has the group offered for people to interact with one another and build a sense of comfort and trust among community members?
  • how did the group rely on one another and work together for a common cause for the community good?
  • has the group helped build community capacity?

The significant impact the group has made in the community.
  • How does the group connect people to the greater community?
  • How did this group contribute to a sense of belonging or identification for the community?
  • What was the positive impact as a result of retaining volunteers?
  • How did the group strengthen and build a sense of community?
