Project Background

The 12 Thousand Acres Plan will incorporate background information from a number of other City documents and studies and look at background work to-date, to identify constraints and determine future development areas, sequencing, and land use.

 

Engagement History

The final draft of the 12 Thousand Acres Plan was presented to Airdrie City Council and a Public Input Session was held on the Plan on June 18, 2018.

 

The final draft of the 12 Thousand Acres Plan was presented to Airdrie's Municipal Planning Commission (MPC) on June 7, 2018. MPC voted unanimously to recommend that Council adopt the Plan.

The City of Airdrie Planning Department posted a draft of the 12 Thousand Acres Plan and hosted two open house sessions on March 28, 2018 and April 4, 2018 for residents and stakeholders to learn about the plan and ask questions of the project team.
Comments and input at the sessions and in the following weeks were recorded, reviewed by the team and helped to inform revisions for the final draft of the Plan.

 

The City of Airdrie Planning Department facilitated meetings and discussions with directly impacted stakeholders including individual residents, land developers, and area businesses from October to December 2017.

 

During our engagement on the plan, the City of Airdrie Planning Department was approached by the University Of Calgary Faculty Of Environmental Design and asked to assist a student team looking at a studio project on growth management and the planning and design of effective urban-rural interfaces. Planning staff walked the students through a similar exercise to the October 17 and 18 workshops and received a copy of the students’ presentation poster in January.


On October 17 and 18, 2017, the City of Airdrie Planning Department held workshops on the 12 Thousand Acres Plan to gather input and allow the community the opportunity to assist in drafting the first land use concepts for the project area.

 

On October 4, 2017, the City of Airdrie Planning Department held an open house to introduce the project and provide information to residents and stakeholders about the 12 Thousand Acres Plan, the project goals, and timeline.

 

Airdrie City Plan Amendment

To support the implementation of the 12 Thousand Acres Plan, an amendment to the Airdrie City Plan was presented to Council for approval on July 3, 2018.

The amendment to the Airdrie City Plan reflects guidelines in the 12 Thousand Acres Plan and updates Policy 2.14 (Determination of Urban Development Location and Sequencing). Future Community Area Structure Plan (CASP) justification requests must provide details on how a future development will be serviced and the proponent’s ability and plan to fund infrastructure, including front-ending costs for infrastructure and services that are required to support the proposed CASP area.
