Agri-Culinary Initiatives

Did you know the City of Airdrie supports many Urban Agriculture Initiatives as a part of our food story?  A growing number of communities are embracing urban agriculture and enjoying the social, economic and environmental benefits of such activities. Many people are interested in local food and urban agriculture as it allows them to have more control over what they eat, know where their food comes from, and even enhance their self-sufficiency. There are many options for integrating local food and urban agriculture into the Airdrie community.

Urban agriculture is the practice of producing a range of foods, such as fruits, vegetables, eggs, honey, and grains, in urban areas that have not traditionally been used to do so. Urban agriculture activities differ from rural agriculture in terms of scale and intensity of the activities.

A local group named Airdrie Urban Farm Collective has recently begun breaking ground. An urban farm operates differently than a community garden. You don't get your own plot or bed at the farm, rather everyone grows and works on everything together and all participate in the harvest!

Alberta On The Plate

Alberta on the Plate is back to celebrate the incredible abundance that is grown and produced across our beautiful province. In celebration of Alberta Local Food Week, the dine around festival is centered around ten days of fixed-price menus highlighting local producers, growers, distillers and brewers. The annual festivities will take place across Alberta from August 6 to 15, 2021.

Food service providers that showcase local products, producers and artisans are invited to register to participate by offering a fixed-price, local menu for the festival period. These menus will highlight Alberta proteins, produce, crops and artisan goods
while celebrating the beauty and bounty of our unique culinary landscape. Kid-friendly restaurants are also encouraged to offer a small plates version of their menu (or a special kids menu) that also features local ingredients so that families can enjoy Alberta on the Plate together.

The City of Airdrie, Economic Development is eager to tell our local food story, and highlight our local assets in the agricultural and culinary food and beverage scene as a Destination Partner.
