In 2010, Alberta Health Services took over the delivery of the ambulance service. City Council directed that the fire department be dispatched to all life-threatening calls and/or calls that the ambulance will be delayed in responding to.
All firefighters in the Airdrie Fire Department (AFD) are either registered Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) or Emergency Medical Technologists-Paramedics with the Alberta College of Paramedics. The AFD is mandated to deliver care at the EMT level. This includes performing actions such as:
- oxygen administration
- intermediate airway procedures
- cardiac defibrillation
- IV access
- medication administration
Due to the physical location of the fire halls in Airdrie, firefighters can arrive at medical emergencies faster and initiate care if an ambulance is delayed in arriving.
Many other fire departments across the country have the same type of medical co-response with the ambulance service. This helps to ensure that timely, appropriate medical treatment can be administered to citizens.
