Dangerous goods mitigation

A hazardous material, by definition, is "any element, compound or substance that poses an unreasonable risk to health or property and which, because of handling, storage, processing or packaging, may have detrimental effects on emergency personnel, the public, equipment and/or the environment."

From a small diesel spill, to natural gas leaks or a train derailment involving anhydrous ammonia, the Airdrie Fire Department (AFD) handles all types and sizes of hazardous material release.

Sometimes these types of spills and leaks involve a large inter-agency response. The AFD works closely with the City of Calgary and their specialized Hazardous Material Response Team and the Alberta Emergency Management Agency, as well as other private and public sectors to ensure the spill is well contained and to mitigate any hazard to the public.
