Airdrie residents invited to share priorities for the SW Recreation Centre for development of a site master plan.

Feb. 24, 2025
For immediate release

Airdrie, AB – The City of Airdrie is inviting residents to share their anticipated uses of the future SW Recreation Centre to aid in the development of its site master plan.

“It’s pivotal we hear the community’s priorities as we move into this next step of building the SW Recreation Centre,” says Mayor Peter Brown. “We want to ensure the SW Recreation Centre not only alleviates current recreation pressures in the city but can grow with Airdrie and address the needs of tomorrow.”

Residents will have two opportunities to engage: online at airdrie.ca/swrecreationplan, from Feb. 24 to March 12, and in-person at Genesis Place during an open house, March 5 between 4 – 7:30 p.m.

“Prior engagements have clearly outlined focused priorities for the future recreation centre’s construction,” says Brad Anderson, manager, Recreation Services. “We know residents want a second pool and sports groups need more space to serve the community. Hearing from the community now will help us narrow down what the desired priority is within each of those core amenities. For example, should the pool be focused on family play with options like a wave pool, or should it be built to maximize capacity for swimming lessons with a flat water pool?”

The site master plan for the SW Recreation Centre will describe how each phase and amenity within connects, while balancing the needs of the community. Residents' voices will be used alongside input from local sports groups, internal reviews and previous engagement such as the Indoor and Outdoor Recreation Needs Assessment (2022), to guide the development of site master plan options, which will be taken before Council in May.

The SW Recreation Centre will be located at the corner of Southwinds Boulevard and Southwinds Drive and will be constructed in three phases. The first phase will include leisure pools, a 25 m lane pool, fitness centre and family play spaces. The second phase will include ice arenas, while the third will include a gymnasium and potential fieldhouse spaces. Phase one of the SW Recreation Centre is anticipated to open in 2028.
