For immediate release

Airdrie, AB – The City of Airdrie kicked off construction on the new Highland Park Fire Station and Training Centre on Monday, May 12. Located at 960 Hamilton Blvd, NE, this will be the city’s fourth fire station, and the first located in the City’s NE quadrant.

“Today marks a significant milestone for the City of Airdrie that supports our ongoing commitment to public safety,” said Mayor Peter Brown.

“Our Airdrie Fire Department does an incredible job keeping our community safe and we’re happy to be able to support that work by ensuring they have the tools, equipment and skills to do that long into the future.”

The facility will house a four-bay fire station, a fire training tower, training classrooms, and space to accommodate the City’s primary Emergency Command Centre.

“We’ve taken a function first approach to the design of this building that will allow for quick incident response times, enhanced safety for our firefighters, and valuable training spaces,” said Airdrie Fire Department Chief Mike Pirie.

“This is another facility we’ll be able to be really proud of, as we continue support our community and the surrounding area.”

Construction is expected to be completed in November 2026.

Additional facility facts:

  • The fire station layout was made to support chute times of 90 seconds with a maximum of 127 feet from firefighter work areas to fire trucks and apparatuses. Using distance and function to guide layout heavily influences where rooms go, minimizing movement through doors or other obstacles that add time.
  • New research on fire safety and cancer risks for firefighters has informed the design, separating clean from dirty spaces, and managing air flow through contaminated areas.
  • The nearly four-story training tower will facilitate countless training opportunities. It will use a natural gas fuel source which is a modern training solution that can be controlled for staff safety during exercises and will not impact neighbouring areas with odours or smoke plumes.
  • Multi-purpose classrooms will be used for both fire training, as well as housing the City Emergency Command Centre when required.
