Holiday waste and recycling tips:

Not sure what goes where around the holidays? Here are some tips for common holiday items.

Garbage
  • Broken Christmas decorations. If sharp, place in a puncture proof container and place next to garbage.
  • Ribbons, bows, tinsel, cellophane, foil wrapping paper and gift bags. Save them for next year or another holiday.
Reuse or dispose of fake Christmas trees at the Transfer Site.

Blue cart or Recycle Depot

  • Dry cardboard - remove tape and flatten 
  • Greeting cards, envelopes, tissue paper and plain wrapping paper (no foil/shiny wrapping paper).
  • Clean aluminum foil pans and plates 
Recycle Depot (not blue cart)
  • Clean packaging polystyrene foam. Remove all tape. (no food related Styrofoam accepted).
  • Batteries and electronics 
  • Clothing 
  • Christmas lights and electronic decorations
  • Real Christmas trees. Remove all decorations and bring real Christmas trees to the Recycle Depot from Dec. 28 to Jan. 29 to be chipped (no tree bags, branches, leaves or wreaths).

Carts needs to close to be collected. Bring any excess sorted recycling to the Recycle Depot (no material can stick out or be placed beside cart).

Green cart

  • Reuse, freeze or place food in your green cart (certified compostable bags, newspaper or paper bags only).

Youth holiday contest

Take a picture or video of you recycling at the depot for a chance to win a free laptop!

Send the picture to education@airdrie.ca. Contest runs from Dec. 5 - 16, 2022. You must be an Airdrie resident under the age of 18 to enter.
