Activation and collaboration grant

This grant supports events, programs and initiatives that bring Downtown Airdrie to life. It’s designed to help create vibrant, inclusive and engaging experiences that connect people and celebrate community.

Applications are accepted on an ongoing, first-come, first-served basis until funds are exhausted or the program ends, whichever comes first. Early applications are encouraged to maximize funding opportunities. To be considered, applicants must clearly demonstrate how their project aligns with and supports the goals of the grant (outlined below) within their application.

Application requirements

Submit your completed application form at least 60 days before your event.

Your application should include:

Marketing plan with sample materials
Detailed event budget
List of confirmed sponsors
Copy of your event permit or exemption letter

Goal #1: Showcase and animate spaces

Use public or underused spaces in creative ways.

How does your event use unique spaces (e.g., parks, alleys, rooftops, storefronts)?
What creative elements are involved (e.g., music, art, dance)?
How will your initiative make the space feel alive and welcoming?

Example: A pop-up art gallery in a vacant storefront featuring local artists and live painting.

Goal #2: Create opportunities for social connection

Foster meaningful interactions and shared experiences.

How does your event encourage people to connect or participate?
Are you including activities for different age groups or communities?
What makes the experience memorable?

Example: A community storytelling night with resident speakers and a social mixer.

Goal #3: Encourage community collaboration

Build bridges between arts, culture, business, and tourism.

Are you partnering with local businesses, artists, or organizations?
Will your event attract visitors or promote local tourism?
How are you showcasing local talent and resources?

Example: A weekend cultural festival with performances, food vendors, and guided tours.

Goal #4: Promote inclusion, diversity, equity & accessibility

Ensure your event is welcoming to everyone.

How are you making your event accessible (e.g., physical access, language, sensory-friendly)?
Are you celebrating diverse cultures or communities?
Are underrepresented groups involved in planning or participating?

Example: A multilingual outdoor film screening with closed captions and accessible seating.

How applications are evaluated and reviewed

Alignment with grant goals (see above)
Community impact (need, benefits, inclusivity)
Feasibility (clear plan, realistic budget, achievable timeline)

Limitations and ineligible expenses

Funding is not available for:

Individuals, political organizations or trade unions
Events primarily focused on fundraising
Events promoting hate speech, violence or religious activities
Volunteer/staff/client appreciation events
Private company promotions or advertising

Ineligible expenses:

Staff wages or volunteer honorariums
Alcohol, prizes or gift cards
Travel, accommodation or fundraising
Political promotion or religious activities
Equipment you plan to keep (unless renting is not cost-effective and justified)
Major capital purchases (e.g., land, buildings, vehicles)
