In 2012, the Mayor for a Day Challenge was identified as a way to engage youth in local municipal government. Social Planning, in partnership with the Mayor’s office, launched a Mayor for a Day Challenge pilot program to begin in 2020. This year as part of the pilot, grade six students learning about local government in school were invited to submit ideas on projects or initiatives they feel would improve the community.
The City of Airdrie and the Airdrie Board of Youth Affairs selected the 2020 Mayor for a Day Challenge winner.
Congratulations to Arden L.
Challenge: There are so many children in Airdrie, but no all-year programs that teach bike safety for kids. Kids need to learn the meanings of different signs on the road, and how to signal to let people know which way they’re going to turn. This prevents bike accidents.
Idea: “My idea is to build a safety village. A safety village is a place that teaches young kids to learn bike safety and how to ride bikes following the rules of the road.”
