Accessory permits

An accessory permit is a permit for installing, constructing or renovating building components, HVAC systems, electrical, plumbing and gas equipment when it is separate from the construction of the original building.

Examples of these types of construction that require permits and an inspection include:

  • Deck
  • Basement
  • Detached garage or shed
  • Developing your basement
  • Additions to existing buildings
  • Renovations to existing buildings (including kitchens)
  • Additions to existing buildings
  • Hot tubs & swimming pools (including above ground pools)
  • Air conditioning units
  • Alteration or addition of any electrical wiring, plumbing or gas piping
  • Fireplaces (solid fuel or gas fired)
  • Furnace replacement
  • Hot water tank replacement (if the size of the tank or the venting is changed from the original)
  • Demolition of an existing building
  • Cross Connection Control (backflow device)

*Please note: The permit list above is not all inclusive. If you are planning to work on your property, adding to or altering any system on a property, please contact Building Inspections to find out if a permit is required.

An inspection is required once the construction/installation is complete prior to covering. 

To apply for an accessory permit, complete the accessory permit application form below and submit it to Building Inspections. A list of the permit application requirements is provided in the accessory permit application checklist below.
