Fire hazard checklist

  • A working smoke alarm must be installed outside all sleeping areas
  • A working smoke alarm must be on every floor
  • Create a home fire escape plan
  • Have a carbon monoxide detector installed in close proximity to all sleeping areas
  • Ensure the house number is visible from the street
  • Never leave any type of cooking unattended
  • Smokers must use safe ashtrays and not smoke in bed
  • Keep combustibles away from any furnace, heater or stove
  • Do not use extension cords in place of permanent wiring
  • Electrical outlets should not be overloaded
  • Never leave candles unattended
  • Use stable, non-combustible candle holders
  • Ensure matches and lighters are kept out of the reach of children
