Green cart exchange
All single family homes in Airdrie are currently assigned one green 240-litre cart. Residents have the opportunity to exchange their original green cart for a smaller 80-litre cart to allow residents to choose a cart size that best fits their needs. Blue and black carts are not available for exchange at this time.
| Cart size | Capacity |
| Small cart: 80-litre (21 gallon) cart |
About eight kitchen sized compost bags full (16" X 17") |
| Regular cart: 240-litre (64 gallon) cart |
About 25 kitchen sized compost bags full (16" X 17") |
Considerations before making your size selections:
- The amount of organic material in the summer (yard and garden waste) varies from winter.
- Excess material placed beside the cart will not be collected.
- All organics materials must fit inside the cart with the lid closed.
- Heavy green carts may not empty completely due to material compacting in the cart.
- Overstuffed green carts may not empty completely.
- You can view the 80-litre cart at the Recycling Depot before making your decision.
How to exchange your cart
Staff will review applications within five business days of receipt and will contact residents to review the cart exchange process and schedule an exchange.
Exchange requirements:
- Each cart has a unique serial number that is registered to the utility account for that property, accordingly only the utility account holder is permitted to request an exchange.
- The cart must be empty and reasonably clean (rinsed and free of debris).
- The cart must be left in an area where it is accessible and visible to staff (e.g. at the side of house/garage, in the driveway, or at the curb). Staff will not enter a fenced yard.
- If your cart is not accessible, empty, or reasonably clean it will not be exchanged.
- Exchanges occur the weekday after collections. If your collection day is Friday you are responsible for ensuring the bin remains empty for the exchange to occur on the following Monday.
