Public hearings and notices on planning-related items are governed under Part 17 of the Municipal Government Act.
City Council, or a delegated authority of Council, makes the decisions on planning proposals. The City is required by provincial law to notify the people who live or own land near a project of upcoming public hearings or, of certain decisions by the City related to that project.
Public hearings occur at 6 p.m. during a Council meeting.
City Council meetings are open to the public for in person or virtual participation.
There are several ways to participate:
Written submissions Written comments will be addressed at the public hearing. Your presentation may be emailed to public.hearings@airdrie.ca by 9 a.m. on the day of the public hearing to ensure Council has time to review your comments. Emails will also be received for the first 10 minutes of the public hearing, but you are encouraged to submit them by 9 a.m. on the day of the hearing. Submissions must indicate whether they are in favour or in opposition to the proposal and must be able to be read within a five minute time limit.
Virtual participation To make a presentation virtually (via Microsoft Teams), you must register to speak no later than 9 a.m. on the day of the public hearing with the City Clerk by email at public.hearings@airdrie.ca. You must provide your name and address and indicate whether you will be speaking in favour of or opposed to the proposal. Written submissions to accompany any oral presentation must also be provided by email by 9:00 a.m. on the day of the public hearing. Once registered, you will be provided with a link to join the public hearing via Microsoft Teams.
In person participation Attend the meeting during which the public hearing will be held. The Mayor will ask those in the audience who wish to speak to come forward. You will be provided five minutes to address the members of Council.
Your participation is public.
Personal information contained in a written submission is collected under section 33(c) of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act for the purpose of public participation in the City of Airdrie’s decision-making process. Written submissions may be made available to the public prior to or at the public hearing in accordance with section 40(1)(c) of the FOIP Act.
Your name, street address, and any opinions provided in your written submission may form part of the public record. Your personal contact information, including your phone number and email address, will be redacted prior to making your written submission available to the public.
As Council meetings including public hearings, are recorded, your participation virtually or in-person will be viewable by the public.
