40th Avenue Interchange to QEII
Project details:
On Jan. 18, 2021, Council gave second and third readings to the debenture borrowing bylaw. The bylaw, by policy, became valid after 30 days (on Feb. 18, 2021). The funding commitment, from City Council, demonstrates the importance of this project for Airdrie, both for today and into the future.
The scope of work for the interchange is on the attached map.
Construction on the interchange started April 30, 2021 and is expected to end in October 2023. The project will execute the construction of a new interchange (QEII overpass with on/off ramps), two overpasses (CP Rail and Main Street) and a bridge (Nose Creek).
Along with the overpass and bridge construction, the contractor will:
- Realign Nose Creek
- Move, import, place and compact over 500,000 cubic metres of clean fill
- Install 4 sets of traffic signals
- Place over 32,000 tonnes of asphalt
- Complete other activities that are too numerous to mention
The milestone schedule for the interchange is attached.
During construction, there will be numerous temporary lane closures, pathway closures, road closures and detours. In the spring of 2022, Kingsview Road at Sharp Hill Way will be closed permanently (COMPLETE - Closed April 15, 2022).
The 40th Avenue Interchange to QEII project closures is on the attached map.
City’s Plan:
- All planned temporary closures will be announced two-weeks (14 days) prior to closing the road and/or pathways
- One-month notification will be announced for the permanent closure of Kingsview Road at Sharp Hill Way
- All Traffic Accommodation Strategy’s (TAS) will be reviewed and approved for safety and manoeuvrability prior to being executed by the contractor
- All planned closures and detours on QEII will be thoroughly vetted and approved by Alberta Transportation prior to being executed by the contractor
- City of Airdrie website will be updated regularly
The 40th Avenue Interchange to QEII is a key component to the ultimate transportation network. The additional network capacity will reduce traffic congestion along the City's existing arterial corridors, including access to QEII. The new interchange will remove transportation as a barrier, within the near and medium term, for residents and businesses as Airdrie grows.
Future development:
The construction of the interchange will benefit future land developments in the area that are currently constrained due to transportation capacity. The new interchange will provide critical transportation infrastructure that will support development of future lands. This project will benefit a future development area about 7,500 acres of land in size, which will yield about 36,000 residential units, 2,100 acres of industrial and 400 acres of commercial development over a 30-year period.
The construction of the new interchange at QEII Highway and 40th Avenue in Airdrie will immediately improve safety and provide more than 300 jobs.
