Secondary suites must conform to the National Building Code (Alberta Edition) and legislation and conditions of the Safety Codes Act. This applies to new construction and conversions of existing developed basements to legal secondary suites.
The list below provides many of the common building code requirements for secondary suites which are in addition to the requirements for a basement development. Additional requirements may apply.
*Permit fees may be doubled if construction has commenced prior to permit issuance.
The ceiling height within a secondary suite and above stairs must be no less than 1.95m (6’4¾”). Ceilings are permitted to be reduced below ductwork and beams to 1.85m (6’3/4”).
An alternate method of protection is a roof constructed of solid materials such as wood, metal or concrete that covers the entire stair.
