Ron Ebbesen Twin Arena to reopen on schedule following major mid-life upgrades.

Oct. 9, 2025/ For Immediate Release

AIRDRIE, AB – The City of Airdrie is pleased to confirm the reopening of the Ron Ebbesen Twin Arena on Oct. 13, following the completion of significant mid-life upgrades designed to extend the facility’s lifespan and improve the experience for users.

Originally constructed in 1991, the arena is a cornerstone of Airdrie’s recreation infrastructure, serving as home ice for numerous local sports organizations. With the upgrades now complete, the facility is expected to continue supporting community needs for the next 25 to 30 years.

“This investment ensures Ron Ebbesen Twin Arena remains an accessible and functional space for residents and visitors,” said Mayor Peter Brown. “We’re proud to reopen a facility that reflects our commitment to recreation and community well-being.”

The upgrades focused on accessibility, operational efficiency and user experience. Key improvements include:

  • Replacement of ice pads and refrigeration system with a more efficient glycol system
  • Maintenance replacement of the original arena board system
  • Retrofitted lobby and lounge washrooms to enhance accessibility
  • Installation of a dry pad mini-rink in the lobby for spontaneous use
  • New flooring in the lobby and lounge to support skate-on access and durability
  • Enhanced accessibility for arena entry points

“Ron Ebbesen Twin Arena plays an important role in supporting local recreation,” said Brad Anderson, Manager of Recreation Services. “The upgrades address aging infrastructure and improve the overall function of the facility. While some finishing details, like upgraded spectator seating, will still be underway when we reopen, the arena will be ready to welcome users back to a refreshed and revitalized space on Oct. 13.”

The community can drop-in for public skating opportunities throughout the day on Oct. 13, between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. View the schedule at airdrie.ca/skating.

The City of Airdrie gratefully acknowledges the support of the Government of Canada and the Government of Alberta in helping extend the life of the Ron Ebbesen Twin Arena through the Canada Community-Building fund.
