Flag protocol

Flags are a meaningful way to show honour and pride in our community. The City of Airdrie takes care to display flags respectfully at all City sites, following national and provincial guidelines.

Each year, certain occasions call for flags to be raised in celebration or lowered to half-mast in remembrance which is noted in our flag policy.

 The City flies flags at half-mast

  • when a Province of Alberta’s half-masting notice applies to all Government of Alberta buildings across Alberta;
  • when a Government of Canada’s half-masting notice applies to all Government of Canada buildings across Canada;
  • on the dates listed in Schedule B of the Flag Policy;
  • by resolution of Council; and
  • at the discretion of the City Manager in the event of the death of a dignitary or City employee.

The Government of Alberta and the Government of Canada may fly half-mast flags in other locations. All flags are flown in accordance with provincial protocol.

Flags outside City HallThe City of Airdrie flies the national, provincial and municipal flags as well as the Métis and Treaty 7 Nations flags outside City Hall.

Other flags flown on City lands are the RCMP flag, the Republic of Korea flag, the Gwacheon City flag, and the Republic of the Philippines flag.
