AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – The City of Airdrie received valuable grant funding totalling $21,000 for two Trans Canada Trail (TCT) repair and maintenance projects in 2023.
Each year, the City conducts assessments on all trails and pathways within the City’s network. As the Trans Canada Trail runs through Airdrie, and is integrated within the City’s own pathway network, receiving grant funding to support some of the 2023 repair costs was a welcome contribution.
“Our residents are on the Trans Canada Trail every day. It’s an integral part of our pathway network that connects all neighbourhoods and shopping districts. Airdrie is fortunate to be a part of the TCT in this unique way,” says Mayor Peter Brown. “We value the partnership we’ve built over the years with Trans Canada Trail and appreciate the generous grant funding we received this year.”
The work in 2023 included asphalt repairs to a portion of the trail near Nose Creek Park due to root damage and other areas receiving brush cutting for improved visibility and invasive plant species management.

The City is responsible for the regular maintenance and care of Airdrie’s section of the TCT, but grant funding helps increase the quality of the Trail, as well as, improve the safety and accessibility for all users. Grant funding for repairs to TCT sections also frees up municipal funds which can be directed toward other critical projects.
The Trans Canada Trail is the world’s longest network of multi-use recreational trails. As of August 2021, the Trail stretches more than 28,000 km – and continues to grow – across every province and territory. Airdrie’s section of the trail connects with Irricana's road network, on Highway 567, and follows major arteries through the City’s east and west sides, to align with Rocky View County's proposed continuation of the TCT route.
