The City of Airdrie has been responsible for managing packaging waste through the blue cart program and Recycle Depot. A new provincial regulatory approach called Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is changing the way waste is managed.
EPR shifts the responsibility from the utility payer (you) to the producer (manufacturer). The producer will partially fund the collection, sorting and processing of packaging waste they create.
Starting April 1, 2025, this program will apply to recyclable materials collected through the blue cart program and at the Recycle Depot.
You can find more information at:
At the May 6, 2025, Council meeting, Council approved Administration's recommendation to reduce utility rates to allow a portion of the saving from the EPR program to be passed on to residents for the 2025 fiscal year.
The average single family utility bill will be reduced by $3.08 per bill as of June 1.
| description | daily rate (pre June 1) | Daily rate (post June 1) | Savings/bill |
|---|---|---|---|
| Residential Waste Fee | $0.85 | $0.78 | $1.96 |
| Environmental Fee | $0.20 | $0.16 | $1.12 |
| Total | $3.08 |
The City of Airdrie bills on a 28 day cycle. Residents receive their utility bill every four weeks. This means that you will receive 13 bills in a calendar year.
The City will no longer accept small businesses or non-profit organization recyclables at the Recycle Depot after April 1, 2025. Businesses and organizations are encouraged to find alternative recycling solutions. Please contact the City for additional resources and guidance on waste management options. Visit the Business Directory for list of waste management companies with a Airdrie Business Licence.
Multi-family buildings can register for recycling collection through Alberta’s new Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program. The multi-family dwelling EPR program will be implemented in stages in 2026. Property managers or owners are invited to visit the Circular Materials website to determine if this program is the right fit for the property.
