Artificial turf field at Ed Eggerer Athletic Park

Construction converting a natural surface sports field at Ed Eggerer Athletic Park to Airdrie's first artificial turf field is now complete. The field and surrounding running track are now open.

The new artificial turf field will provide the community up to ~615 hours of additional prime time play a year by extending the field's availability into the evening hours, spring and fall. The synthetic turf surface will vastly reduce weather as a scheduling variable for sports groups and provide the community with the ability to host games locally and attract events. It is estimated about 35,000 Airdrie residents will frequent the new field each year.

In addition to Airdrie’s first artificial turf field, Ed Eggerer Athletic Park also features a 400 metre, eight-lane rubberized running track, track and field long jump and triple jump pits, as well as a 1,000 capacity seating grandstand. The park is adjacent to East Lake Regional Park and located at the northeast end of Genesis Place at 800 East Lake Boulevard NE.

Assessing Airdrie's need for an artificial turf surface

In 2021, the City partnered with the Artificial Turf Field Project Society to commission a report examining the feasibility of an artificial turf sportsfield in the community. Geotechnical considerations were raised pertaining to the suitability of the soil conditions and further geotechnical investigation was completed as directed by Council.

The resulting report that examined soil suitability, considered alternate field locations, such as the future SW recreation centre and examined the viability of a potential air supported dome. It was found that alternate locations could also present soil suitability considerations and would require additional infrastructure, such as bleachers, parking and washrooms, which already exist at Ed Eggerer Athletic Park. It was also found that an air supported dome would require considerable operating and snow removal costs and that the location of Ed Eggerer Athletic Park could not support a four-season dome.

In July 2023, Council endorsed Ed Eggerer Athletic Park as the location for Airdrie's new artificial turf field, which also received lighting and press box enhancements.

The City received valuable funding for the artificial turf conversion project at Ed Eggerer Athletic Park from the Government of Canada and the Government of Alberta through the Canada Community Building Fund, which provides funding for Canadian municipalities to help build and revitalize public infrastructure while creating jobs and long-term prosperity. As well as the Alberta Community Partnership grant program, which helps municipalities by providing support for regional collaboration and capacity building initiatives. Rocky View County also contributed to the field's conversion through a Community Recreation and Culture Funding Grant, which provides assistance for programs and services that benefit Rocky View County residents.

Construction began in April 2024 and the field has officially reopened as of September 2024.
