City of Airdrie kicks off construction on the artificial turf installation at Ed Eggerer Athletic Park.

April 11, 2024 – For immediate release

AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – Yesterday, the City of Airdrie broke ground on the new artificial turf field at Ed Eggerer Athletic Park.

“We’re excited to be another step closer to Airdrie’s first outdoor artificial turf field,” says Mayor Peter Brown. “It’s pivotal that our amenities meet Airdrie’s needs as we grow. This installation is one of several steps we’re taking to support a long-term vision for recreation in our community,” he added.

The new Football Canada and FIFA sanctioned artificial turf field, suitable for football, soccer, rugby and school activities - will serve as a homefield for Airdrie, Rocky View Schools and north Rocky View County. It is also expected to attract local sports tournaments. Included in the project is upgraded field lighting and press box improvements. Once completed, the project is estimated to add an additional ~ 615 hours of playable prime time to the field’s use.

Last year, Council endorsed the conversion of Ed Eggerer Athletic Park’s existing field to a synthetic turf playing surface following a report examining the suitability of this and other potential locations. The report recommended the location after examining geotechnical considerations, available existing infrastructure such as parking, and timing.

Public access to Ed Eggerer Athletic Park, including the outdoor running track, is closed through construction. The athletic park and new artificial turf field are set to reopen to the public in early-September. Genesis Place’s north arenas parking lot will remain closed during the field’s construction. East Lake Regional Park pathway access is not expected to be impacted; those visiting the park can access the pathway via the parking lots along East Lake Road NE and adjacent to Bert Church Theatre.
