City distributes annual assessment notices

Jan. 17, 2020 / For immediate release

AIRDRIE, AB – The City of Airdrie mailed assessment notices on Jan. 17, 2020. Overall, the majority of homes will see a decrease in assessed values, similar to what surrounding communities have seen. The assessed value is based on economic conditions as of July 1 and the physical condition and characteristics of the property as of Dec. 31. A persistent oversupply of Airdrie homes for sale and the province’s sluggish economic climate has caused a slight decrease in residential property assessments. The non-residential market remains consistent, with a slight increase to some rental rates.

“Neighbouring municipalities have seen these decreases over the past few years,” said Valerie Cottreau, City Assessor. “However, because Airdrie homes tend to be more affordable, we didn’t experience the immediate impact of the economic downturn until 2019.”

The Assessment department looks at Multiple Listing Service (MLS) and other technology during their sales investigation to get the most accurate information as possible. Residents can look at characteristics that informed their assessment at www.airdrie.ca/assessment. If the information that Assessment has on-file is inaccurate, property owners are encouraged to complete an online verification form or call the Assessment department at 403.948.8855. Property owners have until March 27 to request an assessment value review. After that date, the tax rate bylaw process will begin and property taxes will be evenly distributed based on assessment values.
