March 6, 2020/ Fuel Spill/ AFD Response Details

AIRDRIE, ALBERTA –On March 6, 2020 at 12:32 p.m., the Airdrie Fire Department (AFD) responded to the report of a fuel spill on the roadway in front of a residence on Kings Heights Road SE.

When fire crews arrived on scene, they determined that an unknown amount of diesel fuel spilled onto the roadway. With the aid of melting ice and snow, the spill travelled approximately 100 yards down the roadway and into the storm sewer system.

Firefighters initially deployed absorbent pads and booms to contain and collect contaminates before they could enter an adjacent natural water feature.

Staff from Public Works, Water Services and Municipal Enforcement attended to assist with initial investigation and mediation efforts.

Water Services monitored the underground storm water system to determine how much of their infrastructure had been affected.

A Rapid Response HazMat team was dispatched to assist the fire department with removal and disposal of all contaminated materials.

The direct cause of the fuel spill remains unknown, as no vehicle was found on scene at the time of the incident.

There were no injuries to report. Two pieces of apparatus and five firefighters were on scene.
