March 23, 2020/ Fuel Spill/ AFD Response Details

AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – On March 23, 2020 at 2:30 p.m., the Airdrie Fire Department (AFD) responded to the report of a Fuel Spill located on the roadway in front of a residence on Summerwood Road SE.

When fire crews arrived on scene they determined that an unknown amount of diesel fuel spilled onto the roadway. With the aid of melting ice and snow the spill travelled approximately 100 yards down the roadway and into the storm sewer system.

Firefighters deployed absorbent pads and booms to contain contaminates from entering adjacent Nose Creek.

Staff from Public Works, Water Services and Municipal Enforcement attended to assist with initial investigation and mediation efforts.

Water Services monitored the underground storm water system to determine how much of the infrastructure had been affected.

A Rapid Response HazMat team was dispatched to the scene to assist AFD with removal and disposal of all captured contaminated materials.

This incident remains under investigation. There were no injuries to report.

Two pieces of apparatus and five firefighters attended and remained on scene until remediation work was completed.
