AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – On Friday, April 17, 2020 at 11:45 p.m., the Airdrie Fire Department (AFD) responded to the report of a vehicle fire adjacent to a structure in the 100 block of Stonegate Close NW.
While responding, fire crews were notified that the fire extended into the structure. On arrival firefighters found heavy fire conditions showing from the attached garage of a two-storey residential home. Smoke also entered into the interior of the residence.
The home’s smoke alarms activated assisting the lone resident, home at the time of the incident, to safely evacuate to the street prior to the arrival of AFD.
To ensure the safety of neighbours, threatened homes on either side of the fire scene were also temporarily evacuated.
Firefighters quickly suppressed the fire, located in the garage area, to prevent the blaze from extending to nearby homes. One adjacent home did suffer minor damage to the exterior siding and soffit.
Firefighters entered the home to open ceilings and walls to check for fire extension. Smoke was ventilated from the home and a thermal imaging camera was used to ensure that the fire had been fully extinguished.
The Fire Prevention Bureau continues to investigate the cause and final damage estimates of this fire. There were no injuries to report. Six pieces of fire apparatus and thirteen firefighters were on scene.
