April 23, 2020/Electrical Fire/ AFD Response Details

AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – On April 23, 2020 at 11:20 a.m., the Airdrie Fire Department (AFD) responded to the report of an electrical fire located in a residence in the 700 block of Allen Street SE.

On arrival fire crews found a fire burning in an electrical junction box located on the exterior wall of the end unit, of a five-unit condominium complex.

Due to the area still being energized, firefighters made their initial fire attack with a dry chemical fire extinguisher.

Fortis and ATCO were dispatched to scene to assist with safe management of the building’s utilities. Once on scene they quickly isolated the power and gas to all units.

Twelve residents from five residential units were temporarily evacuated to the street.

Firefighters completed extinguishing the fire and then entered each residence to determine if smoke or fire had extended inside. The fire was contained to one exterior wall.

Due to moderate smoke conditions two units were found to have elevated carbon monoxide levels and required ventilation with large fans.

The complex’s property manager was on scene and worked closely with the AFD to assist residents and coordinate required utility repairs.

There were no injuries to report. Six pieces of fire apparatus and sixteen firefighters were on scene. Cause of the fire and final damage estimates are being investigated by the Fire Prevention Bureau.
