April 24, 2020/ Suspicious Package/ AFD Response Details

AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – On Friday, April 24, 2020 at 1:27 p.m. the Airdrie Fire Department responded to the report of a suspicious package located at the Canada Post facility on Kingsview Boulevard SE.

On arrival fire crews found that six Canada Post employees had safely evacuated to their muster point in the front parking lot.

RCMP and AHS personnel were already on scene. The Command Officer was informed that a Canada Post staff member found an unknown, powder-like substance on boxes and the floor of the area where they had been working.

Due to possible exposure to the unknown substance, one patient was initially assessed on scene by the AHS. The building was cordoned off and the Calgary Fire Department Hazardous Materials Response Team was dispatched to assist with identification and mitigation of the spill.

Through further inspection and testing it was confirmed that the substance was a powdered drink product and posed no health or safety concerns.

After approximately two hours the building was deemed safe and the staff were permitted to return to work.

There were no injuries to report. Two pieces of apparatus and five firefighters were on scene.
