AIRDRIE ALBERTA – On Monday, May 18, 2020 at 7:33 a.m. Airdrie Fire Department responded to the report of a structure fire, west of the city, in the rural community of Buffalo Rub.
Upon arrival, fire crews found a deck, attached to the home located on the property, on fire.
Prior to the arrival of the fire department, four residents, two adults and two children along with two pet dogs had safely evacuated.
The fire had extended into the roof and interior of the structure, with heavy smoke throughout the inside.
Due to the rural location of the incident, water needed to battle the blaze was shuttled to the scene by AFD's Water Tender apparatus.
Crews initiated a defensive fire attack, safely applying water from the exterior of the burning structure. After approximately 30 minutes the fire was brought under control.
There were no injuries to report.
Seven pieces of fire apparatus and thirteen firefighters were on scene.
The Fire Prevention Bureau has determined that the fire was caused by a large metal barrel, being used as a recreational fire pit, igniting the wooden deck.
Damage to structure and contents has been estimated at $80,000.
