May 27, 2020/ Structure Fire/ AFD Response Details

AIRDRIE ALBERTA – On Wednesday, May 27, 2020 at 11:50 a.m. the Airdrie Fire Department (AFD) responded to the report of a structure fire located on Morningside Manor SW.

On arrival fire crews found smoke conditions showing from a two-storey residential home.

Prior to AFD’s arrival, two young residents, their cat and two dogs, safely evacuated to the street. Before evacuating the home one of the children attempted to extinguish the fire by applying multiple buckets of water. When she realized that it could not be controlled she calmly evacuated everyone from the house before contacting 911.

Upon entering the home, firefighters determined that the fire was located in the homes laundry area. They quickly attacked and extinguished the blaze which was burning in an electric dryer.

The AFD Fire Investigator determined the cause of the fire to be due to a fault in an electrical appliance, igniting combustible materials.

There were no injuries reported. Damage to the structure and contents has been estimated at $10,000. Five pieces of fire apparatus and fifteen firefighters were on scene.

Public safety message:
The Airdrie Fire Department reminds the public to ensure that all appliances are inspected and maintained regularly. Clothes dryers should be vented properly and the lint trap should be cleaned after each load of clothes has been dried.
