June 17, 2020/ Structure Fire / AFD Response Details

AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – On Wednesday, June 17, 2020 at 7:30 p.m., the Airdrie Fire Department responded to the report of a structure fire located in the 1000 Block of Windstone Road SW.

Residents living in the home had just returned to find that their smoke alarms had activated.

From the safety of the street they contacted the 9-1-1 to request fire department assistance.

Upon arrival, fire crews found dense black smoke conditions on the top floor of a three-storey urban townhouse. Residents living in the adjacent townhouse were also temporarily evacuated.

Firefighters made their way to the top floor and found extreme heat, fire and smoke contained behind a closed bedroom door. This closed door ensured that the fire did not have the opportunity to spread and it was quickly contained and extinguished.

Smoke was ventilated from the home and a thermal imaging camera was used to ensure that the fire had not extended.

The Fire Prevention Bureau continues to investigate the cause and final damage estimates of this fire. There were no injuries to report.

Five pieces of fire apparatus and thirteen firefighters were on scene.

Public Safety Message: The Airdrie Fire Department reminds the public that smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors must be installed, maintained and tested. Working alarms save lives!
