AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – On Friday, August 7, 2020 at 2:51 a.m. the Airdrie Fire Department (AFD) responded to the report of a structure fire located in the 1000 Block of Prairie Springs Hill SW.

Upon arrival, fire crews found a two residential homes engulfed in flames and threatening to extend to adjacent homes on the block.

Throughout the incident crews had to contend with extremely high winds and driving rain.

Prior to AFD’s arrival, seven residents from three homes most threatened by the fire evacuated safely to the street. As a precaution RCMP officers assisted to temporarily evacuate residents from three additional homes located to the south of the fire scene.

With all residents accounted for, firefighters initiated a defensive fire attack with large amounts of water applied to the blaze from both ground and elevated nozzles. After approximately one hour the fire was brought under control.

While battling the blaze one firefighter sustained a lower back injury. There were no injuries to members of the public reported.

Five pieces of apparatus and thirteen firefighters were on scene.

The Fire Prevention Bureau remains on scene investigating to determine the cause of the fire and final damage estimates.
