AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – During their regular meeting on October 4, 2021, City Council gave third and final reading to a series of bylaws that include redistricting lands to support the expansion of an existing Costco Wholesale Canada Ltd. (Costco) distribution facility in Highland Park.
"We are delighted to be working with Costco on this large project," says Mayor Brown. "The proposed expansion of the current distribution centre is a significant investment in our city, we sincerely thank Costco for the investment in the community. Increasing non-residential growth is a key priority, creating employment and investment is imperative to our success moving forward."
The proposed expansion includes the addition of approximately 700,000 square feet. Construction is expected to occur in two phases over several years, with the first phase targeted to commence in spring 2022. The first phase will include the development of 350,000 square feet on the northwest side of the existing facility.
Costco’s Airdrie Depot General Manager, Bob Dennis, indicates that his staff has increased over the past year by approximately 100 employees bringing their current work force to around 280 people.
Costco opened its Western Canada distribution facility in Airdrie in 2008 to take advantage of the close proximity to two major highways. In 2015, the company invested another $12M in a 140,000 sq ft expansion, bringing the total current size to over 430,000 sq ft. Once completed, this next expansion is expected to increase the facility’s building footprint to over 1M sq ft and increase Costco’s work force by another 10 per cent.
The development is located in Highland Park Industrial which is owned and developed by Beecal Developments Ltd. (Beedie). The 240-acre industrial park in northeast Airdrie was established in 2006 and is home to a diverse range of owners and tenants supporting the City of Airdrie and greater surrounding region.
