May 15-21 is National Public Works Week

During the May 2 regular council meeting, Airdrie City Council proclaimed May 15-21, 2022 as National Public Works Week (NPWW) to recognize and celebrate public works employees who contribute to the health, safety and quality of life in Airdrie. NPWW is a national event sponsored by the American Public Works Association (APWA).

“The National Public Works Week theme for 2022 is Ready and Resilient, which seems particularly poignant after the last couple of years we’ve had,” said Mayor Peter Brown. “Our public works crews are on call 24/7. These workers keep our roads, water and sewer infrastructure safe and accessible throughout the year. They are the epitome of readiness and resilience.”

“We want to recognize public works employees who help keep Airdrie running smoothly year-round,” said Lorne Stevens, Director of Community Infrastructure. “We’ll be sharing videos on the City of Airdrie social media channels throughout the week to celebrate our Public Works crews and provide information to the community about the important work that they do.”

At the City of Airdrie, Public Works includes Water Services and Roads.

The Roads department is responsible for road maintenance and repairs. This includes annual street sweeping, managing snow and ice and installing traffic and pedestrian signals, signs and line markings. Road crews work year-round in all-weather to ensure Airdrie residents have a safe and reliable road network.

The Water Services department brings Airdrie residents quality drinking water and manages our wastewater and stormwater collection system. Water Services has also implemented water conservation initiatives over the past few years, including a watering schedule, a leak detection program and rain barrel sales.

The American Public Works Association (APWA) Alberta Chapter, aims to “educate the general public about the value and necessities of public works projects throughout North America.”
