Airdrie residents to get priority registration at Genesis Place

July 12, 2022 – For immediate release

AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – On April 4, Council approved the implementation of a temporary priority registration program for City of Airdrie and Rocky View County residents at Genesis Place starting August 7.

“It was important to put something in place to address the influx of out of area residents utilizing the facility’s programs,” says Mayor Peter Brown. “This temporary pilot program supports our local residents to ensure they have access to Genesis Place’s excellent programs.”

Genesis Place programs have seen a sharp increase in out of area attendance since the start of 2022. Historically, out of area program attendance ranges between 10 - 11 per cent. Factors such as uncharacteristically low programming levels at City of Calgary facilities and the closure of a central north Calgary recreation facility (Vivo) until 2023, have contributed to out of area program attendance rising to 25 per cent in the first quarter of 2022. With these external factors in mind, the pilot priority system will be reviewed for extension or termination in Spring 2023.

The expectation is that program attendance distribution levels will return to levels similar to that of prior years once Vivo reopens and Calgary programming levels return.

Residents of Airdrie and Rocky View County will be given a four-day priority window when registering for programs at Genesis Place. Registration for out of area users will open following this four-day window.
