City of Airdrie shares extreme cold weather supports and safety resources

Dec. 18, 2025/For immediate release

Airdrie, AB – Yesterday was a reminder to us all how quickly the weather can change. With winter temperatures dropping, the City of Airdrie is reminding residents of available supports and resources during extreme cold weather events and sharing important tips to stay safe.

“As the temperatures continue to fall, we encourage residents experiencing vulnerability to access these supports,” says Angela Angel, Social Planner with the City of Airdrie. “We also want to thank the Extreme Weather Action Collective—a group of local service providers—for their ongoing collaboration as we prepare for extreme cold weather throughout the season.”

Supports and resources available during extreme cold temperatures

Daytime warming spaces
During their regular business hours, the following community spaces will be open to welcome anyone in the community needing a warm, safe place.

The City also continues to work with our community partners to make extended hours warming spaces available during extreme cold periods when the temperature is expected to drop to -30 Celsius (with windchill) or colder overnight.

How residents can help

  • For emergencies, call 911.
  • For non-emergency matters, contact Municipal Enforcement at 403.948.8888 or the RCMP non-emergency line at 403.945.RCMP (7267).

Cold Weather Safety Tips

  • Stay indoors when possible. If you must go outside, dress in warm, windproof layers and watch for signs of frostbite, which can occur in under 10 minutes in extreme cold.
  • Travel safely. Plan your route, wear winter clothing, keep a full tank of gas, charge your phone or have a back-up charger, and carry an emergency kit in your vehicle.
  • Work outdoors with caution. Avoid overexertion; sweating can lead to hypothermia, which can be life-threatening.
  • Protect pets. Ensure they have warm shelter, food, and water during cold snaps.
