New weight restriction begins soon on 8 Street bridge near Silver Creek

Dec. 1, 2025 / For Immediate Release

Airdrie, AB – The City of Airdrie is implementing an eight tonne (8,000 kilogram) weight limit on the 8 Street bridge near Kimmer’s convenience store and the Silver Creek community. For context, that is roughly twice the weight of a Ford F350. The weight limit will be implemented over the next couple weeks.

“Administration’s top concern is resident safety,” said Mayor Heather Spearman. “The latest inspection showed the bridge is aging faster than expected, so we’re taking steps to keep heavy traffic off while putting plans in place so first responders and service providers can still reach the community. We appreciate residents’ patience as we move through the replacement process.”

Passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles under eight tonnes will still be able to use the bridge. Heavier vehicles, including road maintenance vehicles, waste and recycling trucks, transit buses over the weight limit and commercial vehicles will need to use alternate routes.

Emergency services have been consulted and response plans are in place. The Airdrie Fire Department will use a temporary emergency access being built from Veterans Boulevard into Silver Creek to ensure service levels are maintained.

The bridge is scheduled for replacement with construction beginning in 2026 and completion expected by the end of 2027. To maintain access during construction, the City is installing a temporary detour bridge over Nose Creek. The temporary structure is expected to open spring 2026. Signs will be installed at both ends of the bridge and at key intersections. Most regular traffic will still be able to cross the bridge as usual.
