Winter storm causes major incidents across Airdrie

Wednesday, December 17, 2025
For immediate release

The Airdrie Fire Department, Airdrie RCMP, Airdrie Municipal Enforcement, Airdrie Transit and Airdrie Emergency Management personnel were working hard today to support the response to the many issues the winter storm caused across Airdrie and area.

The most major of the incidents in Airdrie was a multi-vehicle collision southbound on the QEII near 40 Ave. Extreme winter weather conditions limited visibility and left road surfaces icy and snow covered. On arrival, fire crews found approximately 100 vehicles including large transport trucks strewn across the highway and in adjacent ditches.

The QEII was immediately closed, and currently remains closed, from Yankee Valley Boulevard towards Calgary city limits. Multiple RCMP units from district and division were deployed to support Airdrie RCMP in their efforts.

Firefighters used heavy rescue tools (Jaws of Life) to complete six (6) extrications to assist trapped drivers. Numerous patients were assessed on scene by firefighters and Emergency Health Services Paramedics.

56 stranded motorists were transported from the scene to a Reception Center at the Inspire facility via Airdrie Transit buses.

Today’s successful management of this incident clearly demonstrated confidence, competence and collaboration by all emergency responders involved .
