Saturday, Nov. 22, 2025 at 7:30 p.m.

  • Performed by the Atlantic Ballet of Canada
  • Genre: ballet
  • Tickets: $49 each I $41 youth/senior

From award-winning director and choreographer Igor Dobrovolskiy and multi-disciplinary artist Nipahtuwet Naka Wespahtuwet (Possesom) Paul (Wolastoqiyik, Sitansisk First Nation), PISUWIN is an epic first ever Wolastoq story-ballet set to the soaring music of Polaris Prize and Juno award-winning composer Jeremy Dutcher (Wolastoqiyik, Neqotkuk First Nation).

Based on a Wolastoq tale, this multidisciplinary piece reflects on the world's state of disease, illuminating a path to wholeness and rebalance. The project features eight dancers and blends Indigenous storytelling and ballet, redefining this classical form for a diverse, savvy and contemporary audience. Electronic sound, industrial landscapes and digital projection, juxtaposed with Wolastoq visual motifs of the spiritual and natural world, create the Indigenous cosmology within which the story takes place. “Why does the water no longer quench our thirst?” Pisuwin pushes us to confront our greed and alienation, while inspiring us to take a different path; one of connection, community and wholeness.

It is 1917 when we meet fourteen-year-old Peter Harris, who has been uprooted from his home in Nova Scotia and sent to stay with his Uncle Hubert in the small but bustling town of Airdrie. With his sister serving as a nurse overseas to help with the war efforts, Peter dreads having to spend Christmas away from his home, his sister and everything he holds dear to him. While in Airdrie, he starts working at his uncle’s general store and soon meets the colourful folks of Airdrie, each with their own holiday hopes, hardships and humour. Through these encounters, Peter begins to understand that Christmas isn’t just about where you are- it’s about the people who make a place feel like home.

A biographical musical that blends cabaret, theatre, and dance to celebrate the life and legacy of Josephine Baker—an iconic performer and trailblazer who became the first African American international superstar and one of the most influential figures of the 20th century.

Born in St. Louis in 1906, Baker faced limited opportunities in the United States. After relocating to Europe in 1924, she rose to international fame, captivating audiences with her talent and charisma. She broke barriers in film by performing alongside white romantic leads, challenged gender norms by wearing traditionally male attire and lived openly in relationships that defied the conventions of her time. Beyond the stage, Baker was a spy for the French Resistance during World War II, a passionate civil rights advocate and the adoptive mother of 12 children. Her success often gave her the opportunity to live free from the racial oppression of her home nation, though she never stopped yearning for acceptance in America.
