What goes in the blue recycling cart?

All items must be placed LOOSE in your recycling bin except for:

shredded paper - put into a securely tied clear bag before placing it in blue cart

Organic material that can break down in the City's eight week composting process.

Proper use of the green organics and blue recycling carts, and the Recycle Depot will help reduce the amount of garbage sent to landfill.

The Transfer Site is a collection point for residential waste and construction material. Material is taken to landfill and recycling sites in the Calgary area.

Why contamination is a concern

Contamination refers to items that do not belong in a particular bin, for example, plastics in the green cart and food waste in the garbage.

Contamination is a concern because it:

Increases the cost to sort and transport material from the processing facility to the landfill.
Downgrades the quality of the final product for recyclables and organics.
Takes up space in landfills.

We want to continue to increase our diversion efforts within our City and the current programs are designed to promote diversion.
