Airdrie, AB – City Council has endorsed a concept design for the SW Recreation Centre, setting the direction for the facility’s continued development.
Endorsement of the concept design confirms the overall direction for the SW Recreation Centre, including the building’s form, the arrangement of major amenity spaces and how components connect to each other and the site. The concept design builds on the 2025 site master plan, which established the long-term development framework for the site, transportation access and phasing. Setting direction at concept design supports accurate cost planning, effective decision-making and efficient progression into advanced design stages
“This is an important step for our community,” said Mayor Spearman. “Our recreation facilities are already beyond capacity and the need is urgent. Council is focused on delivering the space our community needs while remaining responsible stewards of the resources entrusted to us.”
With Council’s endorsement, the project now advances into schematic design. This next phase will refine the concept into more detailed plans, including principal floor plans, space connectivity and preliminary building systems. It focuses on refining how users will move through the building, how spaces in the facility interact and how layout will support operations and programming. The schematic design stage will also see the procurement of a Construction Manager to support design decisions, costing, value engineering and opportunities for schedule acceleration. Additional engagement with sport and community user groups will occur during schematic design to help inform refinements focused on efficient use of space.
As part of endorsement of concept design, Council also directed Administration to prepare options for potential cost savings for the project. These options will be presented for review at the regular Council meeting on July 7, where Council will also consider schematic design for the new facility.
Following schematic design, the project will progress to detailed design, where the architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical components of the facility are finalized for construction procurement.
Residents and user groups can expect ongoing updates as the project moves through each phase of design.
