City of Airdrie recognized as 2025 Leader in Sustainability for battery recycling

March 6, 2026 / For Immediate Release

Airdrie, AB – The City of Airdrie has been named a 2025 Leader in Sustainability by Call2Recycle Canada, the country’s leading battery collection and recycling organization.

The Leaders in Sustainability Awards recognize organizations across Canada that demonstrate outstanding environmental leadership through responsible battery recycling and measurable contributions to Canada’s circular economy.

“This recognition reflects the community’s strong environmental values,” said Mayor Spearman. “Bringing batteries to the Recycle Depot helps keep our contractors safe and these small actions make a difference to contribute to the circular economy.”

Through its participation in the Recycle Your Batteries, Canada! program, the City collects an average of 550 kilograms per month at the Recycle Depot. This strong performance reflects Airdrie’s proactive approach to waste diversion and its commitment to keeping hazardous materials out of landfills.

“2025 was a milestone year for the Recycle Your Batteries, Canada! program, driven largely by the continued leadership and collaboration of partners like the City of Airdrie,” said Joe Zenobio, President and CEO of Call2Recycle Canada. “Organizations like the City play a critical role in strengthening Canada’s battery recycling system. We are pleased to recognize their commitment to sustainability and their efforts to advance Canada’s circular economy.”

Residents can recycle household batteries year-round at the Airdrie Recycle Depot. Batteries should never be placed in curbside carts as they can cause fires and pose safety risks to collection crews and recycling facilities.
