The SW Recreation Centre is currently in the concept design phase. This phase defines the overall design direction, including the form of major amenity areas and how spaces relate to one another to support programming, operations and user needs. Setting direction at this stage supports accurate cost planning, effective decision-making and efficient design progression. Council will review and consider endorsing a recommended concept design on March 3. If endorsed, the project will proceed into the schematic design phase for further refinement.
Completed in 2025, site master planning established the long-term development framework for the site. It assessed site opportunities and constraints, transportation access, servicing requirements and phasing. This framework now guides concept design by outlining how the centre’s form and amenities must fit within the broader site plan.
The concept design phase explores high-level plans for the future recreation centre, including the overall building form, the arrangement of major amenity components and how components connect to each other and the site. Concept design uses the site master plan’s long-term framework to shape how the recreation centre will take form within the broader plan. Schematic design translates the chosen concept into more precise plans, where including principal floor plans, space connectivity and early building systems are confirmed. It focuses on refining how users will move through the building, how spaces in the facility interact and how layout supports efficient day-to-day use. During this stage, a Construction Manager will be procured to assist with design decisions, costing, value engineering and identifying opportunities for schedule acceleration. Additional engagement with user groups will help inform refinements.
After schematic design, the project advances into detailed design, producing coordinated drawings and specifications required for procurement. This stage finalizes architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical components to prepare for construction. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2027.
