SW Recreation Centre site master plan

In June 2025, Council endorsed a site master plan for the SW Recreation Centre. The plan established a long-term development framework for the site, including opportunities, constraints, transportation access, servicing requirements and phasing. This framework informs the design phase by defining how the centre’s amenities, form and function will take shape within the broader layout.
Following engagement with Airdrie residents and sport user groups, Three site master plan options (PDF) were prepared to reflect the priorities identified through that process. The final site master plan was shaped by this community feedback and further informed by insights from previous and technical considerations such as:

  • Sustainability
  • Accessibility
  • Capital funding
  • Current recreation pressures
  • Future recreation needs
  • Sports tourism opportunities

The finalized site master plan includes space for a triple arena, with two community-use ice sheets having a seating capacity of 250 each and the third feature arena having seating capacity for 750, to allow the centre to host larger regional tournaments while still meeting ice-use needs identified in the sport user group and resident engagements. It also provided advantageous flow between phases, offers a landmarking opportunity, enhances the site with green spaces along main streets and includes an opportunity for hosting small community events in the Phase I parking pad courtyard.

The endorsed site master plan, contained within a functional report, informs project decisions as the SW Recreation Centre advances into the design phase.

Information collected through an online survey, open house and sport user group interviews identified priorities for the future centre’s use.
