SW Recreation Centre thematic approach and amenity phasing

The SW Recreation Centre will be built in three phases. Phasing supports sustainability, deliverability and long-term operational success, allowing the City to respond to community priorities while managing construction timing and cost in a way that supports long-term value for residents.

Phasing and core amenities were finalized by Council on June 5, 2023, after reviewing the Phased Approach to Development of Facility Components and Amenities Summary Report (PDF), which recommended the centre be built in a way that addresses the broadest community voiced needs as heard in the Indoor and Outdoor Recreation Needs Assessment Study (2022). Based on the level of overall community need, the first phase includes aquatics, fitness and family friendly play spaces. Phase II is arenas, with two community-use focused ice sheets and one feature ice sheet with increased spectator seating. And the third phase is a field house and gymnasium.

Phase I: leisure pools, 25-metre lane pool, aquatics area, fitness centre, family friendly play spaces, common areas and administration spaces.

Phase II: triple ice sheets, with one sheet offering seating capacity for 750 spectators and the other two accommodating 250 each.

Phase III: a gymnasium and field house spaces, including indoor unboarded turf surfaces with spectator seating and further common areas.
