Public engagement on the SW Recreation Centre

Community input is helping to shape the SW Recreation Centre. Engagement has informed project decisions from early needs assessment through site master planning. As the project moves from concept design into more detailed planning, additional engagement with user groups will help refine room sizes, how people move through the building and form how spaces connect.

Indoor and Outdoor Recreation Needs Assessment Study

In 2021, the City commissioned GEC Architecture and HarGroup Management Consultants Inc. to conduct the Indoor and Outdoor Recreation Needs Assessment Study. This study marked the first phase of planning for a new multi-purpose recreation facility. Input from residents and stakeholders helped assess how the community currently uses recreation facilities and identify priority amenities and expectations for future development.

SW Recreation Centre Site Master Plan Engagement

In late 2024, the City gathered additional community insight to support site master planning for the SW Recreation Centre. Through an online survey, open house and interviews with sport user groups, residents shared their priorities for how the future centre should function. These insights – combined with findings from earlier studies and engagements – helped shape the SW Recreation Centre’s site master plan.

Technical studies and reviews

In addition to these engagements, the City also commissioned a series of technical studies to help inform decisions for the new recreation centre.
