Genesis Place Twin Arena temporarily closed following refrigeration system issue

March 17, 2026 / For Immediate Release

AIRDRIE, AB – The City has temporarily closed Genesis Place Twin Arena after an ammonia leak was identified in a controlled area of the condensing tower in the arena's ice plant, which serves both ice surfaces. The leak was immediately isolated by the City’s refrigeration contractor and the system was taken offline on March 16. All appropriate safety protocols were followed and there was no risk to patrons or staff.

As a result, both ice surfaces at Genesis Place are currently unavailable and are expected to remain offline for a minimum of three weeks while further investigation and repairs are completed.

“We recognize how important these arenas are to the community and understand the disruption this closure creates for sport organizations, families and athletes,” said Aimee Johnston, manager of Recreation. “Our focus is on supporting our user groups and minimizing impacts to the community while repairs are completed.”

The City is working directly with affected groups to relocate bookings as alternate arrangement opportunities are identified - with priority being given to those scheduled in March based on availability at other City and partner facilities. At this time, the City cannot confirm potential impacts to bookings scheduled for April.

Updates will be shared as more information becomes available and timelines are confirmed at airdrie.ca/GParenaclosure.
