AIRDRIE, AB – The City of Airdrie will receive $109,614 in funding from the Government of Alberta through the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC) to support six energy retrofit projects across municipal facilities. The funding covers 39 per cent of project costs for initiatives that will reduce energy consumption, lower greenhouse gas emissions and improve facility operations.
"These energy conservation projects demonstrate Airdrie's commitment to environmental stewardship and fiscal responsibility," said Mayor Heather Spearman. "By modernizing our municipal facilities with energy-efficient technologies, we're not only reducing our environmental footprint, but also ensuring long-term cost savings for our residents while improving working conditions for our first responders and other City staff."
Five municipal facilities will benefit from lighting and equipment upgrades, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 114 tonnes annually.
Collectively, the six projects will deliver annual electricity savings of 207,000 kWh, annual natural gas savings of over 334 GJ and combined greenhouse gas reductions of 114 tonnes annually. Over their lifetime, the projects are expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 1,160 tonnes.
Airdrie has a few other projects underway which have also been approved for funding through the MCCAC. Once the projects have been completed more information will be shared.
The Municipal Climate Change Action Centre is a partnership of Alberta Municipalities, the Rural Municipalities of Alberta, and the Government of Alberta. Funding for the Community Energy Conservation Program was provided by the Government of Alberta.
