Carts can be cleaned the same way you would clean a garbage can - rinse them periodically to wash off any debris. You can use water or a water/vinegar mixture.
Rinse frequently to prevent any buildup.
Cleaning before the cold months ensures organic material will not freeze to the cart.
Empty the water from the cart onto your lawn or garden (please do not allow rinsing water to wash into the storm water system) and allow it to dry completely.
Prevent a smelly green organics cart
Besides keeping your cart rinsed and clean and not required, certified compostable bags help to control odours. Add baking soda to reduce odours
Wrap your organics in newspaper, paper bags or paper towels. You can place newspaper or cardboard at the bottom of your cart to help absorb liquid.
Keep your cart shaded from the sun and the lid closed.
Set out your cart on collection day, even if it's not full (especially in summer).
Prevent stuck and overweight carts
Layer contents with newspaper or tape-free cardboard to prevent sticking and absorb liquid.
Stumps, wood, and large branches go to the Transfer Site.
Carts can only be half-filled with sod; overweight carts will not be collected.
