Residents and businesses invited to share input on potential changes to residential land use regulations in Airdrie

May 1, 2026/For immediate release

Airdrie, AB – The City of Airdrie is inviting residents and local businesses to share their feedback on a potential update to residential land use regulations that could allow up to four homes on a single residential lot in more areas across the city. This proposal does not change zoning districts, rather it introduces a land use regulation that would apply consistently across the city.

Currently, many residential areas already allow up to three homes per lot (for example: a single-detached home, a basement suite and a garage suite). This change would allow for one additional home on a lot, subject to meeting existing rules like height, setbacks and parking.

The proposed change is part of the City’s work under the Affordable Housing Principled Action Plan, which focuses on improving residential housing regulations to support a wider range of housing types. This approach aims to better meet the needs of Airdrie’s growing community and local workforce.

The survey will take approx. 7 – 10 minutes to complete and is open to all Airdrie residents and businesses. Input from the community will help inform future decisions while working to align housing options with Airdrie’s values, neighbourhood character and long-term growth goals.

“I know conversations about housing and neighbourhood change can feel uncomfortable. People care deeply about where they live, and they should,” says Mayor Spearman. “That’s exactly why we’re asking for feedback. We need to hear what’s working, what concerns you, and what matters most so we can make thoughtful, balanced decisions as our city grows.”

The survey will be open from May 1 – May 25, 2026. Residents and businesses can join the conversation by visiting www.airdrie.ca/4homes
